FAYETTEVILLE - The future of Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones is in question after the former Arkansas star was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance early Thursday morning.

Jones has played for the Jaguars the past three seasons. According to a police report, he was arrested after Fayetteville officers observed him cutting cocaine with a credit card in a parked SUV near Dickson Street. Jones, 25, was taken into custody, booked into the Washington County Jail at 4:11 a.m. and later released on $2,500 bond.

Jones has an arraignment date set for Aug. 11.

Two others in the vehicle were arrested with Jones, including one of his Arkansas teammates, tight end Jared Hicks.

Hicks, 25, and Benjamin Cook, 26, were in the front seat and arrested for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the report, the arrests occurred after police noticed several people sitting in a Toyota 4Runner in an unlit parking lot behind 313 W. Dickson Street at 12:41 a.m. Thursday. When they approached the vehicle, one officer reported he saw Jones in the back seat with a "white card with white powdery substance" in his lap. He was using a credit card to "chop up and scrape the powder."

The officer ordered Jones to put his hands where he could see them. Initially, Jones did not comply. According to the report, the officer drew his weapon and ordered Jones out of the vehicle.

Jones was placed in handcuffs and when asked if the substance was cocaine responded "yes." Six grams of cocaine were found.

In addition, officers found a black bag with a jar with possible marijuana residue inside that belonged to Cook. Hicks had a straw with "white powdery residue" behind his ear.

Former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said Thursday evening that he was "very surprised" and "very saddened" when he heard about Jones, who starred as a quarterback for him.

The felony drug arrest is a black mark for Jones, an athlete lauded in the state as a sports hero and role model throughout his collegiate and professional career. News of his arrest caught several former teammates off guard Thursday.

"I'm shocked," former Arkansas linebacker Tony Bua said. "I thought people were playing a joke on me when they told me."

Jones, who was the centerpiece of Arkansas' offense from 2001-04, rushed for 2,535 yards and scored 24 touchdowns in his career. He also threw for 5,857 yards and 53 more scores.

The success helped him become the Jaguars' first-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Jones, who converted to receiver, has 101 catches for 1,392 yards and 13 touchdowns in his NFL career.

But Jones is coming off a tumultuous 2007 season. He and Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio were at odds about playing time and Jones' commitment, raising questions about his future. In August of 2005, Jones signed a five-year, $8.45 million contract with the team.

The Jaguars also added depth to their receiving corps in the offseason by signing free agent Jerry Porter and acquiring Troy Williamson through a trade. Jones was expected to compete for a spot on the roster when training camp begins later this month.

Jacksonville was aware of Jones' arrest Thursday.

"We're trying to investigate that now," Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told The Associated Press. "We don't have all the facts. We will comment on that once we have all the facts."

" Why! Why! Why! You are in the NFL! You make a ton of money and you are a star in your hometown! Do you really need a bigger "high" than that. I don't understand these players that are willing to throw it all away for a smoke, pull, or snort. It is so sad. If he is an addict I hope he get helps. If he was just trying to have fun then these guys get hit too hard and their helmets need more padding! It is ruining their logical thinking process... "

" I have to wonder if professional sports players made less money, if they would be less likely to spend it on drugs. "

" Matt I no longer admire you. I used to love to talk about how great of an athlete you are, now it is ruined. You are living the dream and you will throw it all away for drugs. Get the help you need, stay away from drugs and people who do drugs. "

" THE degree of stupidity is unbelievable. That guy just snorted his career away. The Jags have been looking for a reason to cut him and he delivered it hook LINE and sinker. "

" It's always the quiet ones that you have to look out for. This hurts, I saw him at the spring red/white game and he was surrounded by a lot of kids. Way to go Matt, you will be given a second chance but little kids are so forgiving. And yes, D-Mac you had better keep out of trouble and I hope someone will keep an eye on you!!! You are so young and to all that money to do things with. Use it for good things, give back to them community not up your nose!! "
