CONWAY - Authorities say they have arrested a man accused of stealing money by impersonating a police officer and convincing guests at local motels he had to inspect their cash for drug residue.
Conway police said Thursday that 38-year-old James Charles Williams Jr. of Little Rock is charged with robbery, theft, burglary and criminal impersonation. Police say similar scams have been carried out in other Arkansas communities over the last few weeks.
Williams was arrested Wednesday in the Little Rock area and taken to Conway. Police say Williams told the motel guests their money may have been used in a drug transaction and he had to have a police dog sniff the cash. He would then leave the motel room and flee with the money.
Police say there were five victims from the two June 28 incidents in Conway - one from South Carolina and four from Texas.
