A total of 109 junior golfers between the ages of 7-14 participated in The Golf Channel's Mutual of Omaha Drive Chip and Putt local and regional competitions held last weekend at Fayetteville's Stonebridge Meadows Golf Club.
Scoring was totaled by taking each individual score for each event, and averaging them out for an overall score. The top thee local finishers in each division qualified to participate in the regional event. Divisions were combined by age, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14.
The event got started around noon, and was going smoothly before severe weather halted play for an hour.
"When the weather got bad, we had to wait it out for around an hour," said Colleen Lenhard, The Golf Channel's coordinator of events. "We didn't have quite as many participants as we would have liked, but the ones that did show up definitely had a great experience."
In the two weeks leading up to Fayetteville's local competition, events were held in Little Rock and Oklahoma City. After play wrapped up in the local competition, top finishers competed with the top finishers from Little Rock and Oklahoma City for a berth in the national Drive, Chip and Putt competition. The national competition will be held on August 30 in Orlando, Fla.
Taylor Willett, general manager of Stonebridge Meadows, was happy to host the event.
"We were contacted by Sarah Hickman of The First Tee of Northwest Arkansas, and from there we contacted The Golf Channel to set it up," Willett said. "We're always happy to host a great event like the Drive, Chip and Putt."
