Any time you talk about art on show in Northwest Arkansas, you're probably running the gamut from exhibits at the Rogers Historical Museum's Hawkins House to oil paintings at Arsaga's to photographs at Ozark Natural Foods.

    This week is no exception!

    Photos, Naturally

Photographer John Murdoch says he has been "working on some digitally captured images for the last five-plus years" and is sharing a few of his favorites in an exhibit during March at Ozark Natural Foods in Fayetteville.

"I like outdoor photography, but the last few years, studio still-life has become a passionate, therapeutic and extremely relaxing quest of mine," he says. "I use cameras as well as a couple of homemade 'digital capture' devices.

"My mother and grandmother were florists, so I guess they influenced me with the idea of using still-life arrangements to reflect color and light. And if you are lucky enough to see it, or in this case, capture it, then you might feel what the 'arranger' had in mind. I try to place still-life subjects in front of the capture devices and let things happen.

"If people have cabin fever and want to come down and take a look, I would be honored," Murdoch says of the exhibit. "I would be pleased if you saw something that makes you smile or at least brightens your day."

    Information: 521-7558.

    History at Hawkins House

The Rogers Historical Museum will celebrate Arkansas Archeology Month with "Patterns of the Past" theme tours at the 1895 Hawkins House starting Saturday and continuing through March.

From dishes to quilts, the Hawkins House is full of patterns that reflect the tastes and technologies of the past, says Sarah Price, curator of collections. "The home also illustrates the patterns of behavior - the customs and etiquette - that guided everyday life early in the 20th century."

Tours of the Hawkins House are offered during regular museum hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Information: 621-1154 or visit www.rogersarkansas.com/museum.

    Art at Arsaga's

"Wintertime Blues," oil paintings by Nathan Beatty, will be showing at Arsaga's on Crossover from Monday through April 5. A reception for the artist is set for 3 to 6 p.m. March 9. See more of Beatty's work at www.nathanartworks.com.

    'Perky' Pix

Photographic works by nature photographer and Northwest Arkansas native Harold Hull will be on exhibit at The Perk in Fayetteville through April 30.

"I like to backpack into the back country," Hull says, "and capture images of scenes that most people would never get to see in person. I get a great sense of satisfaction sharing these images with others."

Most of the photos depict locations in Northwest Arkansas, but Utah and Washington are also represented. Hull adds, "Except for a few photographs designated as 'interpretive work', none of my photos are digitally manipulated other than for basic color and contrast corrections. I don't believe I can improve on what the Creator has already done."

This is Hull's first solo exhibit. A reception for the photographer is set for 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

    Information: 251-7375.

    Wishing for Spring

A sure sign of spring is the reopening of Wishing Spring Art & Craft Gallery in Bella Vista - and potter Norie Allen will kick things off as artist of the month for March.

Allen has been a member of the gallery for nine years, showing pottery vessels, decorative raku pieces, small figures of boys and girls at play and, more recently, humorous animal figures. She first started working with clay in 1972 at Fayetteville (N.C.) Technical Institute and continued her studies at Baltimore Clay Works, where she learned advanced techniques. Her Japanese heritage led her to experiment with the ancient craft of raku.

Allen will be hosting an artist's reception from 5 to 8 p.m. March 13 at the gallery. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Information: 273-1798.
